Speech Therapy
Why take a myofunctional approach to speech therapy?
We go beyond traditional articulation therapy to get to the root cause of the issue. Persistent speech sound errors can often be attributed to abnormal or restricted movement patterns of the mouth, so we treat these issues directly through a myofunctional therapy approach.
Evaluations
Our speech sound evaluations ensure that nothing gets overlooked! We begin with an intake interview and review each client’s health and developmental history to identify related symptoms. Our assessment process allows us to identify articulation errors as well as their potential underlying causes. We also complete a thorough oral-motor examination and take baseline images of the oral and facial structures that are important for speech production. This allows us to identify potential barriers to proper sound production and measure progress throughout treatment.
Speech sound evaluations last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, and you will receive a written report of our findings within two business days. We consider each client’s health history, current symptoms, and personal goals when formulating a treatment plan. With prior consent, written reports can be sent to other service providers.
Therapy
We specialize in treating tongue thrust and articulation disorders to improve overall speech clarity! We use evidence-based methods to improve speech sound accuracy by combining "Talk Tools," myofunctional exercises, and therapeutic techniques. Our goal is to help you or your child:
-
Position the tongue and lips in the correct places for certain speech sounds
-
Produce all speech sounds clearly
-
Gain awareness of oral posture
-
Self-identify and correct speech errors
Home practice is essential for growth and may include straw exercises, practice with bite blocks, and opportunities to apply chewing and swallowing techniques. We will provide you with everything that you need to integrate and practice these activities in your daily life or to support your child in carrying out home programming.
